Learning objectives

The Course aims at being an introduction to multimedia signals coding and transmission. The main elements of source coding will be analyzed together with the most important image and video coding standards. Multimedia data transmission techniques will be analyzed as well, with a focus on digital TV, satellite broadcasting, IP multimedia systems.

Introduction to image and video compression; Quantization; Differential and Transform Coding; Variable-length Coding; Run-length and Dictionary Coding; Still Image Compression: JPEG and JPEG2000; Motion Estimation and Compensation; Video Coding Standards: MPEG-1/2, MPEG 4, H.261, H.263, H.264/AVC; A brief history of the TV; Digital TV Systems; The MPEG Data Stream; Laboratory on real satellite TV decoder; Satellite Broadcasting – Internet via Satellite; Traffic shaping in satellite broadcast; New Web technologies for broadband systems; IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS); IPTV Functional architecture; Multicast Algorithms; Project work
